Environment health determines our quality of life. The picture above depicts the natural environment of much of the Willamette Valley prior to settlement by Euro-Americans. The Willamette Valley was periodically burned by Native Americans in the region to utilize food items and provide favorable hunting grounds. The dependence on the environment formed an inextricable link between the people and the land.
Economy is an indication of our collective wealth. The picture below depicts a stylized view of the annual migration of the salmon. Prior to settlement of the region by Euro-Americans, the regional economy was based on the success of the annual salmon migration.
Community is the basis of life as we know it. The picture above depicts the participants of a Potlatch in the 1890s. For 10000 years people have occupied the site where Portland is, living in tight knot communities that were based on subsistence.
