Plant Material Options
Plants are essential to life on Earth. They play an integral role in the lives of humans, as well as all other living organisms. Primarily, plants provide food, however there are numerous other functions that plants provide. These functions are known as ecosystem services and include concepts such as wildlife habitat, erosion control, clean water, & clean air . Besides ecosystem services, there are numerous humanitarian values of plants. Native Americans in the Portland area relied upon the native vegetation for most of their requirements including housing, transportation, medicine, dyes, utensils, and fishing & hunting implements. However, humans have increasingly become separated from their connection with plants and the natural world, resulting in loss of knowledge of the many uses of plants. Below is a directory of plants that grow well in the Portland area, while providing many benefits for humans and the natural world upon which we depend.
